Have At It

Sorry, folks, a family emergency (not the Patterson family, my family) is going to keep me away from ER for most of this week. Use this open thread to post away. I'll try to promote deserving comments, but may not be able to.

FCC Levies Record Fine on Family Comic Strip

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today announced a record $1.2 million fine levied on cartoonist Lynn Johnston for a March 20 strip depicting the erotic dreams of 182-year-old “Grandpa” Jim.

“Pornography and breakfast don’t go together,” said FCC head Kevin J. Martin in a Washington press conference. “The American people need to know that their government is here to protect them from foreign purveyors of smut and perversity who will stop and nothing to brainwash the innocent minds of American youngsters.”

In a late-night emergency session, Congress passed a resolution condemning Johnston as a pervert. Calling it the “Palm Sunday Resolution,” House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said “On this holy, holy day, Children should be thinking about patriotism, not perfuhme,” he said.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that in addition to the $2 billion fine, Johnston will be required to produce comic strips that are boring, condescending and bland or risk losing forever her comic-writing license.

“Not a problem,” her lawyer was reported to say.

Chin up, Mike. We’ll say a few novenas to St. Elly for y’all

Okay, so there was a school shooting yesterday. Very sad for everyone involved. But...it happened on a reservation, and the kid was Native. Now I'm going to be REALLY skeptical of Lynn's claims that Native peoples can always work out their problems with sheer goodness and insight.

How about a spinoff comic about Becky the Teenage Roadside? God knows, her adventures would be more palatable than Grandpa Jim's dirty old man fantasies. Shudder!
